choosing between a rooftop tent and ground tent

sleeping in a rooftop tent or ground tent, each come with their advantages and disadvantages. Below are some of the factors that you need while choosing the tent that you will book on your Tanzania safari.

Advantages of sleeping under rooftop tent over ground tent

More secure

When you sleep under rooftop tent you are above the ground, so you don’t run the risk of being attacked by wild animals like baboon, elephants’ hippos or even the lions

Not heavily affected by weather (rain)

Imagine when it rains while sleeping in the ground tents, you are likely to be affected with the water flow. However, the rooftop tent keeps you above the ground enabling not to be affected by the running water.

Quick and easy to setup

The rooftop tents are quick and easy to setup. They are also more flexible as you can put it anywhere regardless of the nature of the ground.

Tanzania camping fees

  • Public campsites managed by TANAPA cost $ 35.40 per person/night plus the concession fees.
  • Special campsites costs $59 per person/night.
  • Campsites outside a national park typically costs around $15 – 25 / tent.

Are campsites readily available in Tanzania national park

Lodges are expensive in Tanzania national parks, and they do sometimes gets fully booked especially during the peak season of June to September. However, the good news is that you can still explore Tanzania on cheap through the camping safari with various campsites situated all over the country. The camping safari will enable you to stay at a secure location while staying within your budget.

Beside the TANAPA campsite that are within the park, you can also opt to go to the private campsites found outside the park at a relative lower rate. At self drive Tanzania we can help you to identify the list of these lodges and help you to book them where need be. Note that you don’t necessarily need to pre book your campsite, you can book it on your arrival.

Do I need to book my campsite in advance?

Except for Ngorongoro conservation area and Lake Natron (For wildlife association) where you need to present the reservation at the park entrance when you are planning to stay inside the park, other parks don’t necessitate you to prebook, they will ask you at the park entrance whether you are planning to spend the night in the park and allocate you where to stay from there.
