Where to See gorillas in Uganda

Gorilla trekking is carried out in two major national parks of Uganda namely; in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park and Mgahinga National Park.

Gorilla Families in Bwindi

There are a total of 18 groups of gorilla families in Uganda, of which 17 are found in Bwindi and 1 in Mgahinga.

In Bwindi National Park :   There are four major trekking regions such as; Buhoma region consisting of gorilla groups like Habinyanja, Katwe, Mubare and Rushegura, Nkuringo region has groups such as Christmas, Nkuringo, and Bushaho, Rushaga region has habituated families such as Kutu, Bikingi, Mishaya, Busingye, Kahungye, Rwigi, Bweza, Nshongi, and Mucunguzi gorilla group and Ruhija sector comprises of gorilla families such as Mukiza, Oruzogo, Bitukura, and Kyaguliro.

In Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, visitors can only two gorillas habituated groups  Nyakagezi & Hirwa gorilla groups.

How to Secure Gorilla Permit.

First of all, visitors interested in tracking these gorillas need to obtain a pass that permits him or her to carry out the activity. This is called a Gorilla permit which is supposed to be booked in advance in order for organizational and planning purposes.

It’s advisable to book permits in an advance of 6 -12 months and the rates vary from type of visitor as we shall see. We have three categories of visitors namely; Foreign Non-Residents, Foreign Residents, and East African Residents each paying a different fee.

The current fares for permits as per now are; $600 for Foreign Non-Residents, $500 for Foreign Residents and 250,000/= for East African Residents.

However, with effect from July 2020, the prices of gorilla permits shall increase from $600 – $700, $500 – $600 as per described type of visitor and its only the East African Residents whose fees structure will remain the same at 250,000/=.
