Car Rental in Moshi: 4×4 Hire at the Foot of Kilimanjaro

Moshi sits at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, 40 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and about 80 km east of Arusha. Most travellers arrive here for the mountain, but the town is also a practical starting point for a self-drive safari: the road to the northern parks is tarmac all the way to the Ngorongoro gate, and the quieter corners around Kilimanjaro are easy day trips. We deliver our 4x4s to your hotel in Moshi or to the airport, so you can start driving the day you land.

How car hire in Moshi works

Our office and workshop are in Arusha. For a Moshi rental we drive the car to you, hand it over at your hotel or at the airport arrivals hall, and go through the vehicle with you before you sign: tyres and spare, jack and tools, warning triangles, fire extinguisher, and the rooftop tent and camping kit if you booked them. The handover takes about 30 minutes. At the end of the trip you can return the car in Moshi, at the airport or in Arusha.

  • Pick-up points: any hotel or guesthouse in Moshi town, Kilimanjaro International Airport, or the Marangu and Machame hotels on the mountain.
  • Prices: the Toyota RAV4 from $60 a day; Land Cruisers and the Nissan Patrol from $110 a day, always with unlimited mileage.
  • Included: third-party insurance, a vehicle briefing, and a phone number in Arusha that answers when you are on the road.
  • Extras: rooftop tent, full camping kit, a driver-guide, and a COMESA yellow card if you want to cross into Kenya.

Send us your dates and the hotel name and we confirm the delivery time and the full price in writing.

Which car to rent in Moshi

The right vehicle depends on where you are driving after Moshi, not on the town itself. Moshi’s streets and the roads to the Kilimanjaro gates are paved or good gravel, so any of our cars copes with them. The choice matters once you head into the parks.

  • Toyota RAV4: for Moshi, Arusha, the Materuni and Chemka day trips, and a dry-season visit to Tarangire or Lake Manyara. Light on fuel and easy to park in town.
  • Land Cruiser with rooftop tent: for the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, for camping in public campsites, and for any trip in the rainy months, when park tracks turn to mud.
  • Extended Safari Land Cruiser: for groups of up to eight, or a family that wants a pop-up roof for game viewing.

Not sure? Tell us your route and we recommend one car, with the reason.

Day trips from Moshi with a rental car

A car turns Moshi from a place you sleep before the climb into a base for a few good days out. All of these are on the paved or good gravel roads around town.

  • Materuni waterfall and coffee farms: about 15 km up the mountain slopes. A short hike to an 80-metre waterfall, then a coffee tour where you pick, roast and grind the beans yourself. Read our Materuni day trip guide.
  • Chemka (Kikuletwa) hot springs: about an hour south across the plains, the last stretch on dirt. A clear, warm, spring-fed pool shaded by fig trees. Go early on weekends, when it gets busy.
  • Lake Chala: a deep crater lake on the Kenyan border, about 1.5 hours east. Walk the rim or kayak, and stay overnight at the lakeside camp if you want to see the mountain at sunrise.
  • Kilimanjaro day hike: drive to Marangu Gate and walk to Mandara Hut and the Maundi Crater viewpoint, without committing to the full climb. Park entry is paid at the gate.

Combining Kilimanjaro with a self-drive safari

Many travellers climb first and drive afterwards. You can leave your luggage with your hotel during the climb and have the car delivered on the day you come down, so you are not paying for a car parked for a week. A typical plan after the climb is a rest day in Moshi, then Tarangire, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti over five to seven days, returning the car in Arusha or at the airport for your flight home.

Practical tips for driving in and around Moshi

  • Fuel: fill up in Moshi or Arusha before any park trip. Stations take cash; card machines often do not work.
  • Traffic police: checkpoints are common on the Moshi–Arusha and Moshi–Himo roads. Keep to the limit (50 km/h in towns and villages) and have your licence and the car papers ready. Our driving rules guide explains the checks and fines.
  • Night driving: avoid it. Unlit lorries, cyclists and livestock make the roads around Moshi risky after dark.
  • Parking: use your hotel’s guarded parking overnight and do not leave bags visible in the car in town.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pick up the car at Kilimanjaro Airport and return it in Moshi?

Yes. Pick-up and return can be at different places: the airport, a Moshi hotel, or our Arusha office. Tell us both points when you ask for a quote.

Do I need a 4×4 in Moshi?

Not for Moshi town or the road to Arusha. You do need one for the national parks, where the tracks are rough and, in the rains, muddy. That is why every car we rent is a 4×4.

Can I drive from Moshi into Kenya?

Yes, with our permission and a COMESA yellow card, which we arrange. The nearest crossing is Holili–Taveta, for Tsavo West and Amboseli. Read crossing borders with a rental car first.
