What does COMESA stand for?

COMESA stands for the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa

It is the largest regional economic organization in Africa, with 21 member states and a population of about 390 million. It was established by a treaty signed in Kampala, Uganda on November 5, 1993. The COMESA Yellow Card Scheme is a third-party motor vehicle insurance that covers drivers and passengers of vehicles traveling across the COMESA region.

The COMESA region includes Burundi, Djibouti, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. South Africa, Mozambique, and South Sudan also use the COMESA Yellow Card.

COMESA has a free trade area and launched a customs union in 2009. It also has several institutions that promote sub-regional cooperation and development, including
