Ol Doinyo Lengai

Ol Doinyo Lengai

The Lengai Volcano Climb at Ol Doinyo | 12–14 hours | $100 per person or $70 per person for groups of two or more
an overnight climb to the top of the well-known “Mountain of God.” The 2,962 volcanoes are a magical and fascinating place to climb in the moonlight. Because of the severe weather during the day, it is not possible to ascend the peak during the day.

Among the hardest one-day climbs in East Africa! Who is willing to accept the challenge?

The unparalleled views from the summit at daybreak make this hike worthwhile, even though it is not for the faint of heart. On a clear day, the summits of Kilimanjaro and Meru should be visible peeking above the eastern horizon. The far end of Lake Natron, whose northern shores border Kenya, is seen to the north. The vista to the west is so breathtaking that it almost seems unreal as you pass the escarpment and look across the Sale Plains to the Gol Mountains! So, put on your hiking boots and get ready to tackle one of East Africa’s most difficult mountains.

An Example of a Trip

Wake up at 11:30 p.m., get tea or coffee and some refreshments at the mess area, and then drive to the base of Lengai.
Reach the base of Lengai at 1am and begin your climb.

You reach the summit of Lengai about 6 a.m.

Start your descent at 6:30 a.m.

Reach the base of Lengai about 12 p.m., then return by car to Lake Natron Camp.

Arrive at Lake Natron Camp at 1pm and be given a cold face cloth and a cool beverage.

1:30 p.m. Have a treatment, have lunch, then unwind by the pool!

Remarks

All costs are paid to the Village Office directly. $100 to $118 inc. VAT for one person. Two or more people: $70 each, plus VAT ($82.60).
The $20 per person, including VAT, TAWA climb fees must be paid in advance.
The climb is free for those staying three nights or longer (TAWA fees excluded).
For the ascent, we provide food, water, Maasai walking sticks, and helmets.

Every day, the situation on Lengai can change. It is important to realise that the guide has the last say over whether or not to allow you to begin a climb if he feels the weather is unsafe. Once on the mountain, the ability to reach the summit segment is also dependent on the weather, so visitors should be prepared for the chance that they may not reach the actual summit. In that instance, reimbursements will regrettably not be offered.

The Village Office is in charge of Mt. Lengai fees, which are subject to change. Before making a reservation, please check prices with the camp manager.
