Chimpanzee tracking in Tanzania is done in the western part of the country in both Gombe stream national and Mahale mountains national park which are located near Lake Tanganyika. You can visit these habituated great apes all year round. However, it is advisable to plan you trip in dry season between June and October. During this time the trails are dry and passable, making easy for you to succeed in encountering the chimps. Furthermore, the sky is much clear, and vegetation is short to create a clearer view and photogenic moment during this time. However, for the budget traveller you can consider travelling during the wet season which is also considered to be a low season. Gombe stream is the famous park at the democratic republic of Congo and Tanzania border. The park was made famous by the research work that was done by Jane Goodall on the chimpanzees. It is on the east hills of Lake Tanganyika. Just next to Gombe is Mahale mountains national park, the home for both chimpanzees and the lions.
Mahale is the only place all over the world where you will have a chance to encounter both the endangered chimpanzees and the lions in their natural habitats. Detailed itinerary
Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport (JRO)
On arrival at JRO, your English-speaking guide will welcome you and take you through your itinerary before transferring you to you lodge in Arusha for refreshment and relaxation. Depending on the time of your arrival, you can opt to go for Arusha city tour to immerse yourself into the culture of Tanzania. With your local guide who is highly knowledgeable about our culture and very fluent in English, feel free to ask him whatever you want to ask him, he will be able to give you the perfect feedback that you need. Return to your lodge for the dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 2: Transfer to Kigoma (preferably by flight)
After your breakfast, you will transfer to Kigoma via Arusha airport. Your driver guide will be eagerly waiting for you at the airport to transfer you to your lodge. After checking in to your lodge and enjoying some relaxation, you will head to the historical Ujiji town where you will visit Dr. Livingston memorial and museum.

Day 3 to Day 4: Explore Gombe stream national park
You have gotten to option to choose from on how to transfer to Gombe stream national park. You can opt to go either by road which is the 30 minutes drive to the park. Alternatively, you can go by boat transfer which will take approximately 1.5-hour drive to the park.
On arrival at the park headquarter, you will be briefed about the chimpanzee trekking experience and then in the company of the guide, you will start to hike through the different vegetations of the park as you. The vegetation varies from short grassland, forests to rainy forests. You will enjoy this vegetation until when you will encounter chimpanzees. Once you encounter the chimp’s family allocated to you, you will be able to observe the behaviour of the gorilla as they go about their daily business.
The park is where Dr. Jane Goodall made her research about the chimpanzee population, and you will be walking through the footsteps of this famous scientist
Beside chimpanzees, you will be able to encounter other primates including olive baboons, red colobus monkey, red tailored monkeys, vervet monkeys, bush pigs, among others

Day 5 to Day 6: Explore Mahale national park
For our second chimpanzee trekking, we shall visit the neighbouring Mahale mountains national park. The park is much bigger than Gombe stream national park with over 900 calling the park their home. The drive to Mahale mountains national park will be approximately two- and half-hour drive and will also involve a boat cruise before reaching the famous home to primates. Beside chimps trekking, you will also encounter various other primates and you can also opt to go for hiking to expand your experience.

Day 7: drive back to Kigoma city
You will start the day with the hike through the Mahale mountains before transferring back to Kigoma where you will spend your night and transfer back to Kilimanjaro international airport the following morning to catch your connecting flight.

Day 8: transfer to your next destination
Today will make the end of our adventure and you will catch your flight to Kilimanjaro to connect with your next flight back home.
You can also opt to combine this trip with other adventure like visiting the northern circuit to encounter the wildebeest migration at Serengeti national park for the wildlife safari. You can also opt to continue to Zanzibar for the beach life or opt to go to Uganda’s Bwindi national park for gorilla trekking experience.
