Gorilla Trekking and the wildebeest migration are among the top thrilling activities while on any African safari.  This 7-day wildebeest & gorillas tour is a perfect itinerary that allows you to see one of East Africa’s iconic parks. These include mountain gorilla trekking in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga region and the wildebeest migration in Tanzania’s northern circuit.

The safari commences with in the northern circuit of Tanzania, where you will spend 4 days traversing several parks as you observe wildlife and birds. After that, you will fly to Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park to see the gentle giants of east Africa in the Virunga massif range. You will begin your Rwandan gorilla trekking adventure with a city tour of Kigali, where you will see several locations, including sites of the genocide.

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport, transfer to your lodge

Day 2: Transfer to Ngorongoro for the full day game drive

Day 3:  A game drive at Ndutu conservation area, proceed to Serengeti

Day 5: Kigali city tour, transfer to volcanoes national park

Detailed itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro international airport, transfer to your lodge

After your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA), your guide will be ready to meet and welcome you. He will walk you through your schedule before transferring you to your lodge in Arusha city to rest and kick off the feeling of jet lag

You will have dinner at the lodge and then sleep over. The journey from Kilimanjaro to Arusha city is around 50 kilometers, approximately a 1 hour and 30 minutes drive.

Day 2:  Transfer to Ngorongoro for the full day game drive

After breakfast, prepare and depart to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Along the trip, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the east African rift valley. Upon arrival at the park headquarters, your guide will pay the park admission fees and then embark on your game drive.

While on the game drive, you are likely to see the famous wildebeest, zebras, and the Big Five. On this tour, you will also explore the crater lake in the Ngorongoro conservation region animals assemble to the lake to drink the water. You will have dinner and spend the night at a tented campground in Ngorongoro.

Day 3: Game drive at Ndutu conservation area, proceed to Serengeti

Ndutu conservation area is a must visit while on your safari between end of December and April when the wildebeest settle in the area. You will be able to meet a lot of herbivores and cats.

Additionally, since this is calving season, you will see a lot of babies and predator-prey interactions. You will spend the night in a tented campsite in the Serengeti national park.

Day 4: Encounter the wildebeest migration, return to Kilimanjaro for a flight to Kigali

Serengeti is one of the best destinations for wildebeest viewing with in Tanzania, coming at the proper time will allow you to see wildebeest crossing the Grumet River on their way to Kenya’s Massai Mara National Park. This experience allows you to watch nature’s survival instincts.

The game drive will last half a day in Serengeti after here prepare to travel back to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back to Kigali. When you arrive at Kigali International Airport, your Rwandan guide will greet you brief you about your itinerary available in Rwanda before transferring you to your resort in Kigali.

Day 5: Kigali city tour, transfer to volcanoes national park

Today is the day to explore Kigali and its unique wonders.  Early in the morning, enjoy your hearty breakfast and then embark on your Kigali city tour where you will visit places such as Amahoro stadium, Visit the official Rwanda national stadium and the Rwanda genocide memorial center to learn about the horrific events that occurred in Rwanda in 1994, when over a million people died. You will next go on a downtown market tour to Kimironko market to see how Rwandans conduct business.

After the tour, return to your lodge for lunch before checking out for your transfer to Volcanoes National Park for the night stay.

Day 6: Gorilla trekking at volcanoes

After an early breakfast, ready with your guide drive to the park headquarters for group allocation and briefing at Kinigi. The briefing gives you vast information about the dos and don’ts to follow while in the forest. After the briefing ready with your trekking gears a ranger guide and two armed escorts will lead you into the forest.

On your trekking experience you have the opportunity to view various monkey and bird species. In the jungle only one hour will be offered to you to interact with these mountain gorillas, viewing them feed, hunt, play and many more.

After that hour to spend with the great primate you will depart at your park head quarters and you will be awarded with certificates.  From here, drive with your guide to have lunch at your lodge.

Day 7:  Return to Kigali international airport for your flight

Day 7 is the last day of your wonderful 7-day wildebeest and gorilla flying safari. After your morning breakfast, you will transfer back to Kigali International Airport for your flight home.
