Information about Mount Meru

The first thing you see when you arrive in Arusha town is Mount Meru.
With a height of 4,566 meters (14,990 feet), the mountain is the fifth highest peak in Africa and Tanzania’s second highest peak after Kilimanjaro. Meru Summit, the highest point on the mountain, and Ash Cone, another peak inside the crater created by more recent volcanic activity, are its two peaks. On clear days, the Great Rift Valley, the Kitumbeini and Gelai volcanoes in the west, and Mount Kilimanjaro, the region’s neighbor, together with the Kibo and Shira Plateau in the east, can all be seen.

On the Momela Route, the top can be reached in three or four days.
It is the sole route to the top. Although there isn’t any technical gear required for the climb, you should be ready for the elevation gain. Taking your time to properly acclimate is the best course of action.

Amazing vistas

The ascent provides breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the wildlife that inhabits the wooded slopes. The summit itself provides a breathtaking vista of tiny cones and craters that are most likely the remnants of multiple volcanic eruptions in the past.
The experience of climbing Mount Meru is fulfilling.

You may be able to see buffaloes and giraffes as you initially traverse a savannah. Parkland, grassland, and a rainforest with Spanish moss and red-hot pokers can be found on Mount Meru’s lower slopes. huge lobelias cover the moorlands and the huge heather zone. Everlasting flowers can be seen in this alpine desert near the peak. There is a slender, desolate ridge that leads to the peak. Amazing views of the Ash Cone inside the crater may be seen from the peak. Although hiking to Meru Summit is the greatest way to see Mount Meru, you may also spend your time there and its surroundings engaging in a variety of activities including bird watching, game viewing, paddling in Small Momella Lake, or going on a walking safari in the national park.

Mt.Kilimanjaro

This region has incredible fauna and birds.

Of the 400 bird species found on Mount Meru, the crowned eagle, Levaillant’s cuckoo, and lanner falcon are the most common. Giraffes, white colobus monkeys, buffalo, elephants, baboons, and flamingos near the Momella lakes are among the creatures that can be seen in the area surrounding the mountain.

Mount Meru’s formation

It occurred following the Great Rift Valley’s development, when a massive explosion caused the volcano that stood on this land to lose its summit millions of years ago. Mount Meru’s horseshoe-like shape is a result of this explosion. With its most recent minor eruption occurring in 1910, Mount Meru remains an active volcano. Dr. Fitz Jaeger was the first person to ascend Mount Meru to the summit in 1904. The Waarusha people who live nearby consider Mount Meru to be a sacred site. Every year during the rainy season, they offer a bull or sheep as a sacrifice to the mountain. Miriakamba and Saddle hut are the two huts on Mount Meru that are available for overnight stays. There are also a few lodges, a rest house, and three campsites in Arusha National Park.
